Hydrogen Technologies is a small studio. We work with a deliberate number of organisations each year, on problems where the answer is not obvious and the stakes are not theoretical.
A small number of practitioners, gathered around the work.
Our practitioners come from research labs, regulated industries, and the long arc of enterprise platform engineering. The work requires both — taste and discipline, imagination and restraint.
We do not chase scale. We chase the shape of the right answer, and then we engineer it. The studio is structured around engagements, not departments. Every member of the practice is deeply involved in client work; everyone writes code; everyone shows their reasoning.
We have a stated preference for engagements that last long enough to be remembered. We will turn away work that is purely tactical, or where the stated problem and the real problem have drifted apart and there is no appetite to close the gap.
Four sentences we work by.
I.
Restraint is a discipline.
The most consequential design decisions are the ones not made — the abstractions not introduced, the cleverness declined, the scope quietly held. Restraint is not absence; it is the result of having considered everything.
II.
Architecture before invention.
We resist the urge to begin with code. The first deliverable on any engagement is a clear picture of the system as it is, not as it is described. Almost always, the work changes once that picture exists.
III.
Clarity outlasts cleverness.
We optimise for the engineer who will read the code in three years, not for the engineer who is writing it today. Cleverness is a debt that compounds quietly. Clarity is a deposit.
IV.
Build for permanence.
We work as if the systems we build are meant to be lived inside for a decade. Sometimes they are not — but the decisions we make under that assumption are almost always better than the ones we make otherwise.
